HLTPAT005 Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing

First Aid Training Group’s Nationally Accredited Drug & Alcohol Screening Officer training course (HLTPAT005 – Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing) addresses new legislative requirements for drug & alcohol testing following the following Australian Standards:

AS/NZS 4308:2008 Procedures for specimen collection and the detection and quantitation of drugs of abuse in urine

AS 4760:2019 Procedures for specimen collection and the detection and quantitation of drugs in oral fluid

AS 3547:2019 Breath alcohol testing devices for personal use

In accordance with WH&S requirements, all drug screening officers must hold a Statement of Attainment per the Australian Quality Training Framework under the definition of ‘Collector’ in the relevant Australian Standards.

The unit HLTPAT005 – Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing is a comprehensive Nationally Accredited pathology training course provided in layman’s terms, available via distance/online learning or classroom training.

What is the course content?
The learning program ensures Collectors follow correct procedures when performing onsite drug & alcohol screening and preparing and packaging a drug or alcohol test specimen and specifically covers:

  1. Introduction
  2. Drug types and their effects
  3. Review of Australian Standards
  4. Drug & Alcohol testing methods
  5. Arranging a test
  6. Drug & Alcohol testing equipment types (urine test cups, oral fluid tests and breathalysers)
  7. Confirmatory testing at the laboratory
  8. Chain-of-custody requirements
  9. Test integrity
  10. Conducting a urine drug test
  11. Conducting an oral fluid drug test
  12. Breathalyser basics
  13. Conducting and recording a breath alcohol test

What Employment Pathways are available?
Employment pathways include conducting drug and alcohol screening at mine sites, transport industries, large industrial sites, medical centres and other workplaces or environments where the need for drug and alcohol screening has been identified as a Workplace Health and Safety requirement.

Where is the training conducted?
Our qualified trainers can conduct face-to-face group training at your workplace or at our dedicated large training centre in Ballarat. Please note: a minimum number of students is required.

Course Duration
This comprehensive course is delivered over six hours and is facilitated by our qualified and industry-experienced instructors.

Online Training Option Available
For those workplaces with only a few staff to train, we offer the flexibility of distance learning. Enrol anytime and start the next day! You will have access to a qualified drug testing officer/assessor over the phone who will assist you with any questions you have during your training.

A comprehensive training pack will be sent to you, which includes drug testing equipment, a student workbook and access to our online training portal.
